Strikt en pragmatisch

Samenwerken is een van de belangrijkste ingrediënten van het werken bij Nikhef. Vandaag: wat deeltjesfysicus Gerhard Raven en dataspecialist Roel Aaij van elkaar leren.

Roel Aaij (Physics Data Processing groep Nikhef): “We zitten heus niet de hele dag te vergaderen hoor. Geregeld samen koffie drinken, dat is wel heel belangrijk. En dan praten.”

Gerhard Raven (deeltjesfysicus Nikhef en VU): “Wij kunnen heel veel praten.”

Roel: “Wij hebben de afgelopen jaren intensief gewerkt aan de overstap van het LHCb-experiment naar grafische processoren, het soort rekenchips dat ook in spelcomputers wordt gebruikt. Die zijn heel geschikt voor efficiënt verwerken van heel veel data tegelijk.”

Gerhard: “In het bijzonder gaat het om het eerste filter, een computer en software die beslissen welke signalen je wilt bewaren voor analyse en wat er meteen weg mag. Dat moet efficiënt gebeuren, maar het vergt ook een zekere paranoia: je moet zeker weten dat je het goed doet, want weg is weg.”

Roel: “Daar is Gerhard heel goed in. Hij hamert altijd op hard bewijs dat je iets goed doet.”

Gerhard: “Dat is essentieel als je een groot experiment als LHCb wilt overtuigen om een radicale stap te zetten, zoals wij voorstelden.”

Roel: “Ik ben daar van nature wat pragmatischer in. Je moet ook gewoon door.”

Gerhard: “Dat heb ik dan weer van Roel geleerd. Dat je niet alleen maar principieel kunt zijn.”

Roel: “Samen hebben we het er door gekregen.”

Gerhard: “Als je elkaar zo goed kent, kun je in vergaderingen net een duwtje meer geven.”

Roel: “Onze samenwerking stamt al uit 2010, toen ik als masterstudent bij LHCb was. Ik bleek handig met de software die toen voor iedereen best nieuw was. Bij Gerhard deed ik de analyses van de eerste LHCb-data.”

Gerhard: “Het fijne aan Roel is dat hij altijd het geheel blijft overzien. Hij is dataspecialist maar ook fysicus. Hij levert niet alleen oplossingen, maar stelt ook kritische vragen.”

Roel: “Ik snap waar we op uit zijn.”

Gerhard: “Nikhef heeft daarin echt meerwaarde. Een instituut vol betrokken hulptroepen, iets waar je op een universiteit alleen van kunt dromen.”

Roel: “En voor mij een heerlijke pool van vragen die wij dan kunnen helpen oplossen.”

Strict and pragmatic

Collaboration is one of the most important ingredients of working at Nikhef. Today: what particle physicist Gerhard Raven and data specialist Roel Aaij learn from each other.

Roel Aaij (Physics Data Processing group Nikhef): ‘We don’t spend all day in meetings, you know. Having coffee together regularly is very important. And then talking.’

Gerhard Raven (particle physicist at Nikhef and VU): ‘We can talk a lot.’

Roel: ‘In recent years, we have been working intensively on the transition from the LHCb experiment to graphics processors, the type of computing chips that are also used in game consoles. These are very suitable for efficiently processing large amounts of data at the same time.’

Gerhard: ‘In particular, it concerns the first filter, a computer and software that decide which signals you want to keep for analysis and what can be discarded immediately. This has to be done efficiently, but it also requires a certain amount of paranoia: you have to be sure that you are doing it right, because once it’s gone, it’s gone.’

Roel: ‘Gerhard is very good at that. He always insists on hard evidence that you are doing something right.’

Gerhard: ‘That’s essential if you want to convince a large experiment like LHCb to take a radical step, as we proposed.’

Roel: ‘I’m naturally a bit more pragmatic about that. You just have to keep going.’

Gerhard: ‘I learned that from Roel. That you can’t just be principled.’

Roel: ‘Together, we got it through.’

Gerhard: ‘When you know each other so well, you can give each other that extra push in meetings.’

Roel: ‘Our collaboration dates back to 2010, when I was a master’s student at LHCb. I turned out to be handy with the software, which was quite new to everyone at the time. I did the analyses of the first LHCb data with Gerhard.’

Gerhard: ‘The great thing about Roel is that he always keeps an eye on the big picture. He’s a data specialist but also a physicist. He not only provides solutions, but also asks critical questions.’

Roel: ‘I understand what we’re aiming for.’

Gerhard: ‘Nikhef really adds value in this respect. It’s an institute full of committed support staff, something you can only dream of at a university.’

Roel: ‘And for me, it’s a wonderful pool of questions that we can help solve.’
